Additional Information

Professor Ng received his M.Sc. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Western Ontario.  In 1980, he joined the then Department of Physics at UBC to build a research program in laser-matter interaction at high intensities.  His interest was rapidly directed towards matter with temperatures of 10,000-100,000 K and liquid to above-solid densities that appeared in the transition of solid to plasma.  Little was known about this unique state of matter as it could not be treated as a conventional solid or plasma.  Yet, the behaviour of such a state played a central role in the critical, initial compression of a fuel capsule in inertial confinement fusion.   To stimulate advance in this new frontier, he coined the name Warm Dense Matter (WDM) in 1999 and started the International Workshop on WDM in 2000.  The meeting has since been held in rotation between North America, Europe and Asia.  In January 2003, Ng joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, U.S.A. as the founding Scientific Director of the emerging Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF).  With the successful implementation of JLF and its Scientific User Program, Ng returned to UBC in September 2008 to initiate international collaborative research as Professor Emeritus.

Professor Ng is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE).  He is also the recipient of the UBC Izaak Walton Killam Research Prize, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Science & Technology Award, the IEEE Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) Merit Award, and the IEEE NPSS Plasma Science and Applications award.
