March 22, 2017

Congratulations to PHAS graduate student Ellen Schelew (supervisor Jeff Young) for placing third in the UBC 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. Ellen was among the 8 graduate students participating in the UBC final. Her talk, "Secure Communication with Quantum Information," also received People's Choice Award during the PHAS heat of the 3MT.

3MT is a competition developed in 2008 by the University of Queensland. Graduate student participants need to explain their thesis research to a general public audience in the minute timeframe. UBC has been hosting the 3MT competition since 2011

In addition to Ellen, 2 other PHAS students participated in the UBC semifinal, including

  • Laurel Stothers - Compton Camera for Proton Range Determination
  • Ryley Hill - The Brightest Galaxies in the Universe

Congratulations again to Ellen for her outstanding performance in the final, as well as to Laurel and Ryley for reaching the semifinal stage! To see the full results for the 2017 UBC 3MT competition final, visit the 3MT competition website.
