For obvious personal reasons, and for legal reasons, we all have a vested interest in maintaining a safe workplace. Personal safety and the safety of your co-workers should be the first priority for everyone in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Obviously, a safe department is also a productive department.

Our department's Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Committee is responsible for carrying out inspections of our departmental laboratories and work areas on a regular basis. The departmental HSE Committee has my full support in ensuring that our work environment conforms to all the applicable safety regulations, as monitored by the university's HSE Committee. I therefore urge every member of the department to be aware of, and comply with the HSE Committee procedures outlined on this webpage. This matter is extremely important, and deserves everyone's respect.
