RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN RADIO ASTRONOMY Fac-2016-03
Applications are invited for a Research Associate position within the Lab for Experimental Cosmology at UBC. The research will contribute to the CHIME project and to the POSSUM project on the ASKAP telescope. The formal supervisor of this position will be Professor Mark Halpern, Principal Investigator of CHIME. Day-to-day supervision will be provided by Dr. T.L. Landecker of the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO), Penticton, BC.
The successful candidate will be based at DRAO where the CHIME Consortium is building and operating its telescopes. Specific responsibilities will be (a) to extract the strong foreground Galactic radio emission from the signals received by the CHIME telescopes in order to advance the cosmological objectives of CHIME, (b) to carry out research in Galactic astrophysics based on these signals, and (c) to become involved in the first science observations with ASKAP in 2017. The Research Associate’s time will be allocated approximately 60% to CHIME, 20% to POSSUM, and 20% to the Research Associate’s personal research program.
Applicants must have (i) a Ph.D. in astronomy or astrophysics, and at least five years of experience relevant to the tasks described above (a longer postdoctoral record is preferred), (ii) a strong record of independent and collaborative research, as demonstrated by papers published in refereed journals of high standing, both as lead author and as co-author, (iii) a strong record of research on the Interstellar Medium and on astrophysical magnetic fields based on observations at radio wavelengths, (iv) demonstrated skill in astrophysical modelling, (v) experience planning and making radio polarimetric observations with both single-antenna radio telescopes and with aperture-synthesis radio telescopes, and of processing and analyzing data from such observations, and (vi) an outstanding record as a good team player and collaborator, as demonstrated by references.
All qualified persons are encouraged to apply. Applicants should complete the online application form . (please accept the security certificate) making sure to select the Research Associate, Radio Astronomy. This is a three-year position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Interested individuals are asked to submit a cover letter including a research statement and CV, along with the names and contact information for at least two professional references to jobs(at)physics.ubc.ca.
