Applications are Invited for the position of Post-doctoral Research Fellow

Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical/Computational Biophysics: Misfolding and Neurodegeneration

Applications are invited to fill an immediate opening in my group for an ALS Canada-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow, in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Our research program enjoys rich and diverse collaborations with numerous colleagues in the areas of neurology, protein folding and misfolding, cancer research, quantum biology, and molecular modeling and simulation of proteins, RNA, and DNA.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated a proven record of experience and accomplishment in the areas of theoretical/computational biophysics, statistical mechanics, and a strong working knowledge of programming and numerical techniques, including computer simulation and molecular dynamics.

The goals of this research project will be to use computation and theory to predict structures and mechanisms for protein misfolding in degenerative disease, with potential applications to ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.  The start date will be decided by mutual agreement, but the position will be filled as soon as possible. The contract will be for a two year term with the possibility of extension, renewed after 1 year provided satisfactory progress.

To apply for the position, please email your CV and arrange to have 3 letters of recommendation sent to: Professor Steven S. Plotkin, Department of Physics and Astronomy, 6224 Agricultural Road, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. V6T 1Z1. steve (at) phas.ubc.ca

The Department of Physics & Astronomy and Genome Sciences and Technology Program at UBC are leading centres for research in North America, and offer a stimulating and friendly environment with first-rate facilities. You will be expected to collaborate with myself, and potentially others, on novel projects at the forefront of research in the above areas, and to co-publish your results in prestigious scientific journals during your stay here. Numerous research tools will be available to you, including: immediate access to 360 committed cores without any queuing, and 14TB of storage. Several fellowship opportunities will also be available to you, for which you are encouraged to apply. As a member of a vigorous, interactive research community in a highly ranked and internationally recognized university, you will be expected to observe, at all times, the highest professional standards.
