Parachoniak & Machine Shop Technicians received staff awards

February 6, 2018

Congratulations to PHAS IT group manager Ron Parachoniak and the Department Machine Shop Technicians (including Nick Lemmel, Stephen Carey, Matthew Sluyter, Daniel Skjaveland, Mark Reynolds), for receiving the 2017 Physics & Astronomy Staff Award. The award, which recognizes staff members for their significant contributions to the department, is announced every year during the Departmental Christmas Party.

Ron has been working with the department since April, 1987, after he completed an MSc in Physics with us. As the IT group manager, Ron Parachoniak coordinates all departmental IT related activities. He is responsible for the maintenance and security of our network. In this fast, ever-changing field, Ron stayed ahead of the curve by researching the latest technology and keeping our systems up to date. With his 30 years of service to the department, Ron has played a central role in the successful evolution of our IT to its current state.

The department machine shop is essential to the success of our research and teaching work. From the repair of simple instrument to the fabrication of complex apparatus, the machine shop technicians support the department in all mechanical related matters. They provide an important service by manufacturing custom parts for the research groups and teaching labs, by ensuring a fully stocked store and material supply, and by training students the safe usage of machine tools.

Congratulations again to all the award recipients!
