2012 Welcome Orientation for Women
Date: January 5, 2012
Time: 10:00am - 4:30pm
Have difficulty convincing your parents? If your parents are not convinced that a degree in physics, astronomy, engineering physics, biophysics or combined education+physics degree is the right option for you, you are welcome to bring them along to the discussion of our degrees + panel discussion (12:30-2:30). The faculty present there will be glad to answer all their questions.

Hands-on Activity (optional)(full) | Small Robot Building - Materials will be provided by us, however if you want to take your project home, we will ask you to pay for some of the costs (~$20). This activity will take place in Hebb 31 (see map above). |

Start of the orientation | Students sign up for the lab tours, receive name tags and info packages, etc. This is at the Michael Smith Laboratory Theatre. |
| 11:30 | Welcome Address | Prof. Doug Bonn, the Head of the Physics & Astronomy Department, will welcome all participants. There will be a brief discussion of the schedule, introduction of the group leaders and organizers. |
| 11:30-12:10 | Lunch- Free! | Lunch plus time for participants to check out various exhibits, to meet their fellow group members and group leader, and to brainstorm for a few questions to ask during the panel discussion. |

Discussions of our department's various degrees in physics (Mona Berciu), engineering physics (Andre Marziali), astronomy (Jaymie Matthews), biophysics (Carl Hansen), physics and education dual degree (Chris Waltham), and co-op opportunities (Javed Iqbal). |

Q & A based on questions from the audience. There will be a chance for one-on-one interactions with the panel members at the end. Groups leave for their first lab visits. |

Feedback, Desserts, and Closing | All participants meet again for a snack (desserts), to give us some feedback (prizes will be available), and a very short closing speach. |
