Notes on grading policies
Exam grades: The above distribution will be used to calculate
your final mark, provided that you
have a passing mark for the exams (Midterms plus Final combined). You must pass
the exams to pass the course! Marks will be posted on
Final: Final date/time/place is announced in March or April by
Student Services and will not change- there is no makeup final. Any time table
clashes must be reported immediately and an exam clash form must be completed,
available at Student Information Services in Brock Hall. Remember to report to
the room corresponding to your section number (202) and bring your UBC ID card.
Routine regarding
absence due to sickness or injury (from Student Services): Students absent from final
examinations held in the official examination periods must submit a ÒRequest
for Academic Concession formÓ to the office of their dean or director. Students
requesting academic concession will be asked to provide such evidence as is
deemed appropriate. If there is a medical problem, the request should be
accompanied by a ÒStatement of IllnessÓ form obtained from the Student Health
Service physician or attending family physician. Students may be asked to
provide additional information. Academic concessions are granted only by the
Dean or Director (or their delegate) and are a privilege, not a right.
Midterm dates: Monday Feb
9, Monday Mar 16 (in-class, Hebb theater
Midterm grading policy: The better of your two midterms
is worth 10%, the worse 5%.
Midterm makeup policy: Same as the final makeup policy due to
sickness or injury, except the ÒRequest for Academic concession formÓ and
ÒStatement of Illness formÓ are submitted to me. There are no makeup midterms.
Exam formula sheets: I will provide them. You will get
your final exam formula sheet as a handout on the first day of class. It will
also be posted on
Labs: Labs are typically attended by 1 faculty and 2 TAs. The lab
schedule is given on
Tutorials: Tutorials are attended by two TAs. There are 6 tutorial sessions starting
Jan 12. The tutorial schedule is given on
HW: These are online on the www.masteringphysics.com
website. To get access:
á
Select Knight second edition text, Postal code is
V6T1Z1, course is P10208W, name is your Last Name and First Name, Student ID is
your UBC student ID #.
iClicker: There will usually be iClicker questions every class.
In the unlikely event your iClicker doesnÕt work during a class for some
reason, there is a 11% allowance given at the end of the semester, i.e. your
grade is divided by .9 at the end of the semester so that for example a 4.5% or
more counts as the full 5% credit.
General help on questions: There are lots of resources and
options to get answers to your questions:
1.
You can go to the last ½ hour of any tutorial section
and ask questions,
2.
There is a Discussion Board on
3.
A resource center is available before the final exam,
4.
Forming study groups is very common for this course.
You are encouraged to do it!
5.
My office hours are twice a week, and I will be glad
to answer questions there (please come
here to ask me questions rather than emailing me).
6.
There are numerous practice questions (with answers)
on the Mastering Physics website.
Course resources: Course notes for this section as well as previous
exams will be posted on
Additional handouts: The Schedule of Topics, along with Major
Learning Goals, will be handed out on day 1. The final exam formula sheet will also be handed out on day 1.
Academic integrity: it is essential to the functioning of UBC as an institution of higher
learning and research. All
UBC students are expected to behave as honest and responsible members of an
academic community. See http://www.students.ubc.ca/calendar/index.cfm?tree=3,54,111,0
for more information on academic honesty and academic misconduct.
