It's been a while! I hope everyone enjoyed Pi day, the women enjoyed their free lunch, and the men enjoyed the scraps. Our next event (other than the lecture series tonight at 4 in CEME 1204) is the free LaTeX Session. This event is on Tuesday, March 22 at 5:30 in the Physsoc Lounge.

LaTeX is the software Physicists use to publish all the pretty articles you read. Learn how to do it yourself! Helpful for writing lab reports, thesis papers, or just making your homework pretty (and have other people look at your work in awe!). Bring your laptop and we'll help you set it up and learn how to do it. This will be helpful for everyone in the future, but might be especially useful to graduating students wanting to write up their Honours Thesis.

Cheers,
Trish

Free Pancakes!
As a reminder to everyone who hasn't seen the email for whatever reason, tomorrow (October 29th) the UBC Physics Society is hosting a pancake breakfast from 09:00 to 12:00 in the Hennings main lobby (outside of Hennings 200). The pancake breakfast will be FREE for all physsoc members! Yes, that's right, free! To anyone who is not a physsoc member, you'll have to get a membership if you want any pancakes. At $5 a membership, this is quite reasonable, especially considering we're expecting to do more such events later in the year! For other membership benefits, check out the newspost from September 13.

LaTeX Tutorial
Have you heard about LaTeX? Are you interested in learning how to use it?
(Do you have a class that requires LaTeX reports? Do you need help getting started?)
You're in luck! The UBC Physics Society is hosting a tutorial on Saturday, November 6th for interested students! The session will be in the Hennings computer lab, and will start at 2:00pm. It should take around 1-1.5 hours, but we will likely hang around to answer any further questions.
If you are interested and wish to attend but don't have a key to Hennings for weekend access, then send an e-mail to the physsoc (physsoc(AT)physics.ubc.ca) and we'll let you in before the session starts.

September 18th, 2010

What will the 2008-09 shirt bring? YOU can decide!

Submit your ideas (funny slogans or drawings) to Karen at karen.schmelcher AT gmail.com. If you can think of a funny idea but can't make a nice drawing, submit it anyways, maybe we can find someone to draw it! March 20th, 2008

Lots of big events are coming up as we reach the end of the term. Most importantly, our Annual General Meeting is happening on Thursday April 27th, 11AM to 12:30 in Hennings 318. This meeting is open for all physics students but you will have to be a Physsoc Member to vote and/or run for exec positions. If you're interested in being more involved with Physsoc and work with really cool people, consider running for an exec position. We will have openings and everyone is welcome, regardless of year level. For more information about the positions, click here.

UPPAC will be happening on March 29th. Please register over the weekend if you intend to come. You don't have to give a talk or present a poster, you can come to just watch. It's a great experience for grad school and/or thesis projects and looks great on a resume. Click on the link on the upper right of the page to view the UPPAC webpage for more info and registration.

Year-end dinner tickets are on sale now! We will have a booth in Hennings next week, deadline will be Wednesday March 25. The dinner will take place on April 3rd (Thursday) at Chivana restaurant on 4th and Vine (there is a bus from UBC) at 6:30PM. Food will be served at 7PM. The dress is semi-formal. It's really cheap this year, only $25 and you get an appetizer buffet, a choice of beef tenderloin, mahi-mahi (white fish, like tuna), or a vegetarian stir-fry as your entree. You also get a choice of dessert: creme brulee or chocolate mousse. The food alone is worth $25, but there will be a DJ and possibly dancing after dinner as well.

More information about PHYS 101/102 Exam Packages and review sessions to come in April.
Also, we are working on a design for the Physics T-shirt for 2008. More information next week.

EVENT - Beef and Pizza: Wednesday March 19, 2008 noon.

Location: TBA, somewhere in Hennings likely.
Beef and Pizza is a chance for you to give anonymous feedback (ie. your beef!) on your physics and astronomy courses, professors, classroom, exams, labs, TAs, etc. Physsoc hosts this event twice a year, where we will collect your comments and present them to the Department, anonymously, on your behalf. Oh, did we mention we will be serving free pizza for your "beef"?

March 3rd, 2008

UPPAC 2008 (Undergraduate Pacific Physics and Astronomy Conference).

The Undergraduate Pacific Physics and Astronomy conference is a premier opportunity for undergraduate students in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest to share their research and meet other students. The 2008 conference will be hosted by your very own Physics Society and will take place Saturday 29 March 2008 in the Hennings Building at UBC.

For those with presentations to do, this would be an excellent chance to practice as well as let your colleagues know what you've been working on! It's also an equally good opportunity to learn what your colleagues are doing. We're hoping to start a new tradition, similar to the CUPC but locally, so it won't cost so much to travel.

Please see the website at http://www.physics.ubc.ca/~physsoc/uppac for more information or email uppac.2008 AT gmail.com.

EVENT - February 29th, 2008

Storm Koerners: 4PM, at Koerner's Pub (in the Graduate Student Society building basement).
