ASTR 304 - Reseach Topics in Astrophysics

Mark Halpern, Jeremy Heyl and Jaymie Matthews are teaching the course together this year. We will cover three frontier areas of astrophysics.
  • Neutron Stars
  • Exoplanets
  • Cosmic Microwave Background

We will base the grades on the short weekly problem sets (due in class on Monday), class participation and a final project.

Meeting Times:
Class
Monday 3-4pm Hebb 10
Monday (Colloquium) 4-5pm Hennings 318
Thursday 8-9:30am Hennings 304
Office Hours
TBA TBA Hennings 417

Neutron Stars: Instructor, Jeremy Heyl

Neutron stars harbor the most extreme conditions in the universe. I will cover the basic physics and astrophysics of these objects by studying the primary literature.

Topics we will cover include:

  • Radio emission from neutron stars
  • The nuclear equation of state
  • The structure of relativistic stars
  • Accretion onto neutron stars

Exoplanets: Instructor, Jaymie Matthews

Cosmic Microwave Background: Instructor, Mark Halpern
