Arizona Trip Summary

Five members from the Astronomy Club - Alicja, George, Matt, Sen, and Brian - went to Tucson, Arizona from February 16 to the 19th. Here's Alicja's summary:

Hi everyone!

We're back from sunny and gorgeous Arizona. We had a fantastic time and our trip was a success. Here's a short summary of what we did during our time there. If you are interested, please check out the photos on the club website.

Please feel free to contact us about the details of the trip.

Monday:
Got in to Phoenix and rented a car. Drove to our hostel in Tucson.

Tuesday:
Took a tour of the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab. Met with Dr. Daniel Eisenstein and chatted about cosmology and graduate studies at the University of Arizona. Chilled at the beautiful UofAZ campus. Drove to Saguaro National Park at night to stargaze.

Wednesday:
Visited the Pima Air and Space Museum. Took a tour of Kartchner Caverns State Park. Met with UofAZ graduate student (and ex-AstroClub exec) Suresh Sivanandam and drove to Mt.Bigelow. Met with Dr. Paul Smith who explained to us his work on quasars, as well as showing us around the 61" Kuiper Observatory. Drove down the mountain and did some more gazing.

Thursday:
Drove up to Mt. Hopkins to see the Multiple Mirror Telescope (6.5 m). Drove back to the UofAZ campus and waited to meet up with more professors. Met with UofAZ PhD graduate Catherine Neish (and ex-AstroClub president). Drove back to Phoenix and caught a flight back home.

Next observation night: Monday, February 9th

The next observation night is scheduled for Monday, February 9th, as long as the skies are clear. Meet in front of the EOS building at 8pm. Dress warmly! There will probably be two telescopes, and we'll be able to at least see Jupiter or the full moon.

If you arrive late and the front door is locked, just call George, our club president. His cell phone number is: 778-889-6715.

February Trip to Arizona

The Astronomy Club is going to Arizona! Tentatively scheduled for February 16 to February 19. The first planning meeting will take place on Monday, January 12 at 5PM on the second floor of the Irving K. Barber building. Please contact Alicja Kielbik for more information.

Astroclub's First Observation Night: Thursday September 25, 2008 9:30 PM at EOS East

Meet at the front of Geophysics/EOS East (2219 Main Mall). It's been a while since our telescope has been used, so George is scheduling our first observation night of the year for this Thursday. Talk: November 23 @ 5PM, Hennings 202

A special afternoon with Dr.Jaymie Matthews

Join us for a special talk with UBC's very own Jaymie Matthews.

Talk title: What's the weather like on HD 209458b?
Probing exoplanets with Canada's first space telescope

Presenter: Dr. Jaymie Matthews, Mission Scientist of the MOST Space Telescope Project, and Associate Professor Department of Physics & Astronomy

The MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of STars) mission was launched in June 2003, and in more than three years in space, has more than doubled its planned mission lifetime and exceeded its expected scientific productivity by far. MOST puts stars on 24-hour-per- day "stakeouts", monitoring their brightness variations to a precision no other instrument on Earth or in space can match. The MOST space telescope (designed and largely built here in this Department) has been used to study the reflectivity of the giant planet orbiting the Sun- like star HD 209458. Its results are telling us what the atmosphere and clouds are like on a planet we can't even see, orbiting a star 160 light years away.

    Movie Night: October 15, 2005 @ 4PM, IMAX

Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D
We will be meeting at 3:30 at the IMAX Vancouver and attending the 4 PM show of the film. See the forum for more details.

Free NASA materials will be distributed and there will be door prizes as well!
