Transferring Data

This page offers hints to help transfer files & data.

You should be aware of exactly where your files are stored. On phas systems, user files will generally be stored in the home directory ( remotely mounted from the dept fileserver), on personal systems the "homedir" may be on a local drive ( windows: C: , Mac OS: /Users). On occassion you may want to transfer file from one system to another ( say from a local drive to your phas homedir.)

  1. scp secure copy is recommended for all non local copies, ie data must travel on a network( public).
  2. filezilla a multi-platform GUI interface
  3. Large files -- see the reference How to transfer large amounts of data via network.
