Student Accident Insurance

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Student Accident Insurance necessary?

In order to accommodate student lab activities it is necessary to permit operation of various labs into the late evening or, sometimes, twenty four hours per day. Many of these labs are now multi-purpose and contain a variety of equipment whose operation has some element of risk. e.g. Eng Phys course work.

What is the Student Accident Insurance policy?

Student Accident Insurance (SAI) is an additional insurance that provides a measure of excess medical coverage for the benefit of UBC Physics and Astronomy Department students performing course work in environments where the risk of injury is greater than in a classroom, e.g., laboratories. It provides a $50,000 maximum benefit for death or dismemberment and a $5,000 excess medical coverage, e.g., ambulance, prescription drugs.

The Student Accident Insurance policy does not provide 24-hour coverage. It applies only during the involvement of the student in course work. Students must have the BC Medical Plan or its equivalent from another province in place in order to provide themselves with basic medical care.
