PHAS Staff Feature: Richard Lam

May 27, 2015

The Department of Physics & Astronomy recently received the certificate of Recognition by Canadian Forces Liaison Council “for assisting their reservist-employees in maintaining their commitments to the Canadian Armed Forces."

But, the spot light here really should be on Richard Lam, one of the PHAS engineering technicians who works in the Electronics Lab.

Richard has been with PHAS since 2003, and has served part-time in the army for approximately 10 years in total. In 2013, Richard took a long unpaid leave to serve on Canada’s Reserve Force as the Army Communication and Information Systems Specialist. He was part of a critical team responsible for ensuring fast and reliable wired and wireless communications among Army units and the Forces. In order to serve as an Army Communication and Information Systems Specialist, Richard went through several stages of training, including 7 weeks of full-time basic military training (boot camp) fin Shilo, MB, 18 weeks of occupational qualification training the Canadian Forces School of Communication and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario, and additional specialty and advanced training.

Now back here in Physics & Astronomy, Richard troubleshoots failed electronics, and handles faculty and student requests for sophisticated designs of electrical board - with tremendous attention to detail and creativity. A valuable member of the department, indeed.

Thank you, Richard, for your service to Canada and to the Department – this certificate is for you!
