First year students receive Vogt FYSRE for research experience

March 27, 2015

Congratulations to first year students Jonathan Zhang and Koosha Rezaie-zadeh, the two recipients for the 2015 Erich Vogt First Year Student Research Experience Awards (FYSRE)!

This award honours Dr. Erich Vogt (1929-2014), one of the most distinguished Canadian nuclear physicists of his generation. For over thirty years, Erich Vogt taught bright and eager First Year Physics students.  The FYSRE awards give outstanding first year students an opportunity to gain work experience in paid summer research positions.  Other such research opportunities usually give preference to second and higher year students.

Jonathan is a first year science student passionate about physics. As a recipient of FYSRE, Jonathan will be working this summer at TRIUMF, Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics, which Erich co-founded. He will be working under the supervision of Dr. Petr Navratil (TRIUMF Theory Group).

"I am interested in studying theoretical particle physics because I want to understand how the universe works," said Jonathan. "I am extremely grateful to receive this experience, as I feel like this experience will help me learn more about my intended field, and will also help me make new connections with other scientists in the field of particle physics."

Koosha is a first year engineering student. He participated in the International Physics Olympiad in Denmark in 2013 and received a Gold medal - this places him as one of the best young physics students in the world. He will be working with Dr. Valery Milner at UBC Physics & Astronomy with his FYSRE.

Congratulations again Jonathan and Koosha!
